Having lived in different countries, I have often thought about how much relocation changes you.
People usually talk about the excitement of moving abroad, the opportunities, the new experiences and the sense of adventure. What people rarely mention is that once you leave your home country, something changes quietly. You never quite belong in the same way again.
You adapt, you grow and you build a life somewhere else, but a part of you always stays between two places. That is both the good part and the difficult part. đ
đź Professional Realities of Moving
For anyone relocating professionally, a few things become clear with time:
- Work culture is a hidden language. Every country has its own way of communicating and its own sense of hierarchy. Something considered initiative in one country may be seen very differently in another. đŁď¸
- Experience needs a new translation. Professional credibility in one place may need to be explained again somewhere new. That takes patience and a willingness to prove yourself. đ
- Networking is survival. Building trust from the beginning can feel uncomfortable, but it matters more than ever when you leave familiarity behind. đ¤
“Over time, you learn how much to adapt and how much of yourself to keep unchanged.”
There are moments when you feel like an outsider, and then there are the things you miss unexpectedly. Small habits, familiar conversations, everyday details that never seemed important before. â
đ Two Places Called Home
Eventually, the unfamiliar becomes part of daily life. A new country becomes home, while the first one never really stops being home too.
For me, Italy will always be where I feel happiest, even though life led me elsewhere to build my home. đŽđš I think that is part of being an expat: learning to feel connected to more than one place, while knowing a part of you will always remain somewhere else.
Are you considering a professional move or already living between two worlds? Iâd love to hear your story.
